Scoring points in Kingdomino is incredibly simple once you understand it - but mastering it is where the strategy begins.

How Kingdomino Scoring Works

Scoring takes place at the end of the game. Once the game ends, every connected terrain region in your kingdom scores points using one simple formula:

Each terrain type is scored separately, including:

  • Forest
  • Wheat fields
  • Water
  • Grasslands
  • Swamps
  • Mines

Only connected tiles of the same terrain count as a single region.

Example of Kingdomino Scoring

Imagine you built a forest region containing:

  • 14 forest squares
  • 4 crowns total

Simple right? But here's the important part!

A huge region with no crowns scores absolutely nothing.

For example:

  • 8 connected water tiles
  • 0 crowns

This is one of the most important lessons in Kingdomino: crowns create value.

Why Crowns Matter So Much

New players often focus only on building large regions. Experienced players know that crowns are the real engine of scoring. A small territory with multiple crowns can outperform a giant empty region very quickly.

For example:

  • 3 forest tiles with just 3 crowns = 9 points
  • 8 water tiles with 1 crown = 8 points

Common Kingdomino Scoring Mistakes

Connecting the Wrong Terrain

Only matching terrain types connect together. Forest never links to grassland, even if the tiles touch. You can still put different regions next to each other of course, so long as one end of your domino is touching a matching region.

Combining split regions

If two forest areas are separated by another terrain type, they score separately.

Ignoring Crowns Early

Waiting too long to collect crowns often leaves players with large low-scoring kingdoms.

Overvaluing Mines

Mines contain lots of crowns, but they're rare and difficult to connect. Chasing mines too aggressively can often backfire.

Bonus Points in Kingdomino

Many groups also play with the optional bonus rules.

  • Middle Kingdom (+10 Points): Your castle must sit exactly in the centre of your completed 5x5 kingdom.
  • Harmony (+5 Points): Your kingdom must contain no empty spaces.

Together, these bonuses add a massive 15 points — often enough to win a close game.

Scoring in Kingdomino: Digital Edition

The digital editions of Kingdomino calculate scoring automatically in real time, making it much easier for new players to understand how strong each region is becoming as they build.

The digital version also helps visualise:

  • Connected territories
  • Crown efficiency
  • Bonus point opportunities
  • End-game scoring totals

That means you can spend less time doing maths and more time planning the perfect kingdom.

Whether you're learning the basics or optimising every domino pick, understanding Kingdomino scoring is the first step toward consistently winning games.

Pass it on.
