Winner of the prestigious Spiel des Jahres in 2017, Bruno Cathala's Kingdomino has become one of the most popular modern board games ever made. Fast to learn but packed with clever decisions, it's a perfect gateway game for families, couples, and strategy fans alike.

If you've just picked up Kingdomino (physically or digitally) here's everything you need to know before your first game.

What Is Kingdomino?

Kingdomino is a tile-laying kingdom-building game for 2 to 4 players. Over the course of the game, players draft domino-style terrain tiles and build a personal 5x5 kingdom around their castle.

The goal is simple: create large connected regions of matching terrain and fill them with crowns to score points.

A typical game takes around 15-20 minutes.

Kingdomino Setup

Each player begins with:

  • A starting castle tile
  • A king meeple in their chosen colour

Shuffle all 48 domino tiles face down. The number of dominoes used depends on player count:

  • 2 players: 24 dominoes total, with each player controlling two kings
  • 3-4 players: all 48 dominoes are used

Reveal four dominoes face up and arrange them in ascending numerical order. Lower-numbered tiles are generally weaker, while higher-numbered tiles tend to contain more crowns and stronger scoring potential.

Turn Order and Tile Drafting

Kingdomino's drafting system is what makes it so clever. Every turn has two parts:

  1. Place the domino you selected during the previous round into your kingdom
  2. Choose a new domino for the next round by placing your king on it

The important twist is that the domino you choose determines your turn order in the following round.

  • Players on lower-numbered dominoes go first
  • Players on higher-numbered dominoes go later

That creates a constant trade-off between grabbing a powerful tile now or securing an earlier pick next round.

Kingdomino Placement Rules

Every domino placed into your kingdom must follow two rules:

1\. Stay Within the 5x5 Kingdom

Your kingdom can never exceed a 5x5 grid, including your castle. If a tile cannot legally fit inside the grid, it cannot be placed.

2\. Match Terrain Types

At least one half of the domino must connect to one of the following:

  • Your castle
  • A matching terrain type already in your kingdom

For example, forest must touch forest, water must touch water, and so on. If you cannot legally place a domino, it is discarded - which can be devastating for your final score.

How Kingdomino Scoring Works

Scoring happens at the end of the game once all dominoes have been placed. Each connected terrain region scores as follows:

For example:

  • A forest region comprised of 6 terrain squares with 2 crowns scores 12 points (6x2)
  • A region with no crowns scores 0, regardless of size

This is the core strategy of Kingdomino: large regions matter, but crowns are what make them valuable. After scoring every terrain type, add the totals together for your final score.

End-of-Game Bonus Points

Many groups play with the optional bonus rules, which are also available in the digital version of Kingdomino.

  • Middle Kingdom (+10 Points): Your castle must sit exactly in the centre of your completed kingdom.
  • Harmony (+5 Points): Your kingdom must form a complete 5x5 square with no gaps.

Together, these bonuses can swing games dramatically.

Five Beginner Strategy Tips

1\. Prioritise Crowns

Large regions without crowns are rarely worth much. A smaller territory with many crowns will usually outscore a giant empty region.

2\. Don't Always Take the "Best" Tile

Choosing a powerful domino often means moving later in turn order next round. Sometimes an average tile now gives you access to better choices later.

3\. Plan Around the 5x5 Limit Early

One of the most common beginner mistakes is expanding too aggressively. Keep your kingdom compact and flexible from the start.

4\. Focus on a Few Terrain Types

Kingdomino rewards specialisation. Two strong scoring regions will almost always outperform several scattered small ones.

5\. Chase the Bonus Points

Middle Kingdom and Harmony together are worth 15 points - often enough to decide the winner.

Playing Kingdomino Digitally

If you're learning Kingdomino for the first time, the digital edition is one of the easiest ways to get started. Tile placement is streamlined with intuitive controls, legal moves are highlighted automatically, and scoring updates in real time so you can quickly understand how strong each region is becoming.

The game includes:

  • Solo play against AI opponents
  • Local and online multiplayer
  • Cross-platform play with friends
  • Fast matchmaking for quick games
  • Optional bonus rules like Harmony and Middle Kingdom
  • Full tutorials for new players

Because the digital version handles setup, scoring, and rule enforcement automatically, games move quickly and smoothly - making it ideal for both casual sessions and competitive play.

For experienced players, Kingdomino: Digital Edition also makes it easier to experiment with strategy. You can play more matches in less time, learn drafting patterns faster, and sharpen your understanding of turn order and crown efficiency without the overhead of physical setup.

Most importantly, the gameplay remains completely faithful to the original award-winning design by Bruno Cathala. The same tactical decisions, kingdom-building puzzles, and tense drafting choices that made Kingdomino a modern classic are all preserved in digital form.

Whether you're playing around the table or online in Kingdomino: Digital Edition, mastering the fundamentals is the first step toward building a winning kingdom.

Now get out there, rulers - and build the mightiest kingdom in all the realms!

Pass it on.
